about Karen Gaspers
I’m an accomplished writer and editor with a decade of experience in the publishing industry. I have a broad range of experience, in both digital and print media, creating user-friendly content for newsletters, magazines, websites and academic textbooks. Hallmarks of my work include an eye for detail, meeting deadlines, an ability to see the big picture on issues and a solid work ethic.
My in-house stints include the National Safety Council, where I spent five years turning detailed, sometimes technical information into readable content. I reported on the federal government, interpreted annual surveys and profiled industry leaders. I also edited and proofread articles during the production process using AP Style.
I also spent time as an editor for Douglas Publications, now Briefings Media Group. I planned and executed editorial content for two trade magazines and an ancillary e-newsletter. I wrote articles, managed writers/columnists, and built relationships with industry stakeholders. I was responsible for editing content according to AP Style and working with design to manage the production process.
As a freelance writer and editor, my articles have appeared in places such as Massage Therapy Journal, Parents, Chesapeake Family, and TravelMuse.com. I’ve also turned complex medical studies into easily digestible summaries for busy medical professionals. Currently, as calendar editor for Chesapeake Family, I manage content for the magazine's online calendar, produce content for a weekly e-newsletter and write the event highlights page for the monthly print issue.
I hold a Master’s in Writing from DePaul University, Chicago, and a Bachelor’s in English from Doane College, Crete, NE.
